The Legendary Tennis Players Of All Times

Tennis seems to have changed a lot over the years. The style of play is a lot different to what it used to be like and the racquets have changed a lot too, I suppose a lot of the change seemed to occur around about the Eighties.

Why don’t we just go back to the Eighties for a moment and try to remember some of the great Tennis players that showed us their talents back then.

Undoubtedly the greatest player of the Decade had to be Bjorn Borg. This magical Swede absolutely dominated the sport of Tennis at the time. That was until he decided to retire at such an early age. What a loss to the game of Tennis that was, and who knows how many more Grand slams he would have gone on to win.

One of the great serve and volley players of the Eighties was funnily enough another great Swedish player, Stefan Edberg. He just seemed to be able to serve and volley with ease, and this was a talent that took him to the world’s number one by the late Eighties.

But not every great talent on the circuit at that time was Swedish, as a young German seemed to come to the fore in the Eighties, a certain Boris Becker. He won quite a few titles on the Tennis merry go round, but I suppose that he will always be remembered as the first teenager to win Wimbledon.

Ivan Lendl is the next person that I remember, as this Czech player had an amazing base line play. He was such a steady player, and he also won quite a few tournaments and a few grand slams as well.

I suppose the most memorable player of the Eighties had to be the American bad boy, John McEnroe. Not only was he a brilliant player at singles but he was a mean doubles player as well, and when things did not go all his own way, he always used to shout at the line judges “you cannot be serious, the ball was in!” – unforgettable and fun.

When I think of Tennis of the Eighties, these are a few of my favorite players, but there was undoubtedly a lot more. All of these have made a contribution to the way tennis is played today, and I for one will not forget them!

The Real Reason Most Tennis Players Do Not Get Better

Most tennis players find that their game plateaus at some point. This could happen after a few months, or after 1 or 2 years. This is a primary source of frustration for many players, and I suspect one of the main reasons why players leave the game although they adore it.

Why does a certain degree of stagnation settle into the game of most players? Why is tennis improvement such an elusive concept?

In my own experience and after working with numerous tennis players, what I have come to realize is that we have got a deep resistance to change in life. Tennis is really simply a mirror for how we live in general. Since we resist change in life so frequently we will sometimes resist change on the tennis court too.

It can feel awkward and uncomfortable modifying our strokes or methods with the objective of taking our game to a higher level. We would regularly like to just stay cosy in what we know, even though it is very obvious that it’s not to our bigger advantage to do so. Improving in tennis demands relentless flexibility and a willingness to embrace the unknown. This always suggests getting out of our comfort zone and working with new concepts, techniques, and tactics.

In tennis, it’s often helpful to concentrate on the idea of short-term sacrifice for long term gain. Be willing to shake it up and try some new things, even though it temporarily makes your game worse. This is particularly true if you play a lot and you’re finding that your game just isn’t progressing as you would hope.

On another level, it’s useful to give up our expectancies of how we should play and our attachment to getting better. It’s often this very attachment that is making us stay stuck where we are. Develop an approach of curiosity around the game rather than disappointment. This will do wonders for your progress!

A Journey Through Charming Downtown Tallahassee

As my car comes to a stop at the intersection of Adams Street and College Avenue, I am reminded of how much I love Tallahassee. The view from my driver’s window framed the scene as the road dipped low and then rose to display the main gate of Florida State University.

It almost seems like a greeting card – the aged but graceful brick arches, the historic fountain that has shared graduation moments with hundreds of thousands of students, and behind it the Wescott Building flanked by native palm trees. My view takes in some of downtown Tallahassee as well, as College Avenue continues to its end at the entrance of Florida State University.

The co-location of Tallahassee’s quaint downtown to Florida State University adds to the charm of the city. Just a short walk from campus you will find a collection of restaurants full of night life nestled among the businesses, banks, government offices and the state Capitol buildings.

Additionally, downtown Tallahassee offers a handful of museums, a science center, the IMAX theatre with a planetarium as well as a multitude of historic buildings. Tallahassee visitors and residents fill the downtown streets throughout the year, attending the many festivals, markets, parades and activities highlighting the deep sense of community that we share. There is no shortage of hotel accommodations within walking distance to all of these Tallahassee attractions. Whether you come to Tallahassee for business or pleasure, there are plenty of exciting opportunities to enjoy in the downtown area.

As your walk through downtown takes you east on College Avenue across Monroe Street, some of Tallahassee’s finest historic homes are within view. Many are listed on the National Historic Registry and are a great representation of the city’s past. Take a break and enjoy the view from any of the downtown Chain of Parks. Lined with stately oaks dripping with Spanish Moss, these lovely little parks add a charming touch to Tallahassee’s downtown.

Serena has made an Amazing Comeback

Following a year of severe injury, ranging from pulmonary blood clotting to multiple foot surgeries, 13-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams returned to the WTA spotlight in August, winning her first tournament title since her return to the game after nearly a year on the sidelines. Williams defeated ninth-ranked Marion Bartoli of France, with a 7-5, 6-1 victory in the Bank of the West Classic final in Stanford, California.

Serena fought her way from a two break shortfall in the first rally to a commanding end. The second rally saw Williams get ahead 5-0, rendering the final outcome somewhat predictable according to pundits.

The match’s outcome demonstrated a stark turnaround from Bartoli’s earlier record against Williams, in which Bartoli crushed Williams at Wimbledon’s fourth round earlier this year. Bartoli gained her victory against the former globally no. 1 ranked Williams in straight sets at Wimbledon. William’s victory in Stanford was her first appearance in the finals since the 2010 All England Club, which she won.

William’s win was the first time in three years in which an American woman won on home soil, the previous winner being herself in the 2008 US Open in New York. The triumph will likely prope Williams from a ranking of 169 to no.28 prior to the US Open, as she entered the tournament unseeded.

Serena easily fought her way to the finals, trouncing Maria Sharapova 6-1, 6-3 in the quarterfinals. Her performance against Bartoli is sure to go down in the tennis history books as a demonstration of her amazing abilities as a tennis player. Bartoli advanced to the finals when Slovakian Dominika Cibulkova withdrew in the semifinal due to a strained abdominal.

Nonetheless, Bartoli faced injuries of her own on Sunday. Her performance was hampered by a swollen bruise in the center of her right hand, which she said loosened her grip, although she did add that it did not cost her the game.

Williams has not only returned, but she is ready to take on the hard-court series this summer. She says her stamina is back and her game continues to improve daily, which is likely to strike fear into her opponents in upcoming tennis tournaments. It’s clear from that performance that despite a defeat in the US Open tennis fans should be eagerly awaiting her next matches.
